Happy New Year 2018

I successfully managed to swamp 2017 with so many other projects I didn’t write a single blog post. Partly due to personal training in North London being busier than ever, but more importantly, I made a conscious decision to take a year off ultra running to give my body a bit of a rest. As one of my clients put it ‘you like to treat your body like an experiment don’t you’.

Instead I focused on indoor rowing and managed to pull a creditable 6.42.6 over 2000m at the British Indoor Championships in early December, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Adam Neill. I then ran the Chevin Chase in Wharfedale on Boxing Day as my first competitive race of the year. 7 miles over the Otley Chevin in late December was as destructive to the cobwebs as it sounds.

The rest of the year, I lived vicariously through my clients who I helped train for races ranging in distance from their very first 5k, to 50 miles over mountains. Several lost large amounts of weight, 5 stone in one case and others prepared for weddings, adventure races and pregnancies to name but a few.

I haven’t made any hard and fast plans for 2018 other than to finish one particularly big project I have going on which is cloaked in secrecy, to stage another successful music festival (have a look at Field Maneuvers if you like a dance) and to compete at the indoor rowing championships again next December, where a sub 6.30 would be nice.

And on the running front, I have just entered the Rombald Stride, 22 miles over Otley Chevin, Baildon Moor and Ilkley Moor in early February. It’ll be hard and cold and I’m very excited. If that goes well I’ve got my eyes on the Hardmoors 55, the Snowdonia Marathon and the Marlborough Downs Challenge 33. Then I think a crack at another hundred miler is on the cards.

Happy New Year to you all.
